BMI calculator-your weight , height, and age

BMI calculator

BMI Calculator is the easiest and fastest way to calculate your normal body weight. Thanks to it, we can quickly and easily learn about the state of our body fat and determine if our lifestyle and diet are adequate.

BMI (Body Mass Index), otherwise known as the Quetelet indicator, is used to estimate whether the body weight is correct.  Adolf Quetelet developed the body mass index in 1832. He then observed that the body weight increases depending on the height of the body. BMI is a tool that lets you know if your diet and lifestyle are right, and whether you should go to a specialist to ask for help. It is also the fastest way to the first medical diagnosis – BMI index control is used to monitor the health of our body.

The BMI index is an uncomplicated mathematical formula that allows you to determine the content of body fat in the body, based on the proportion of body weight (kg) to height (in meters).

Wondering how to calculate BMI? All you need to do is use a BMI calculator that will help you calculate your rate. Enter gender and current weight and height in empty boxes. After reading the result from the BMI calculator, follow the advice. Regular checking of the indicator status will help you maintain your ideal weight.

Calculating BMI helps to avoid the risk of obesity and various diseases related to overweight.

The calculation of BMI is based on taking into account three simple information, the knowledge of which does not require any medical examinations. We must only have information about weight, height and gender .

The result of the BMI calculator is obtained by dividing the body mass in kilograms by the square of the height given in centimeters when selecting whether the index calculates a woman or a man. This is very important information because for biological reasons the normal fat content in women is higher than in men. This is accompanied by less muscle than at men. Of course, both sexes with a similar growth rate will have a similar BMI index, but with a high probability, the fat tissue in a woman will occupy a larger body fragment than in men.

It should be remembered that the risk of diseases increases the level of body fat, not the weight itself! In addition, the distribution of this fat tissue plays an important role. Ochering of internal organs is very dangerous.

Another indicator that says a lot about our health is the WHR index, which takes into account the waist circumference to hip circumference. In women, obesity is the most common obesity in femoral-femoral obesity, while in males – abdominal obesity (fat is located around internal organs). Thus, it may turn out that a woman, despite the greater amount of fat, is less likely to suffer from diseases than a man whose fat is accumulated around the internal organs. The conclusion is that each patient should be treated individually and carefully analyzed by means of several indicators.

The BMI counter gives the result according to the basic or extended classification for adults. The first one distinguishes three grades: underweight (<18.5), normal (18.5-24.99) and overweight (> 25). The second division consists of eight types, which constitute the basic extension, giving more specific information about the state of body fat.

The level of overweight or underweight can also be calculated using a modified body mass index –  BMI Prime . It is calculated by dividing the BMI of a given person by the BMI value being the upper limit of the normal, i.e. 25. If the number obtained falls within the range of 0.74 to 1, the weight is within the norm. A value below 0.74 indicates an underweight, over 1 being overweight. The BMI Prime indicator allows, for example, a doctor to show the problem of overweight in a patient and quickly calculate how many kilograms he should lose weight, so that his weight returns to normal.

The older we are, the more our muscle mass and bones decrease. At the same time, the amount of adipose tissue increases most often. It should be taken into account that the BMI index does not take into account the aging process in the body, therefore the BMI results in the elderly are often incorrectly interpreted as better than in reality.

Many people wonder how much should be the correct BMI. Muscles are dense and much heavier than fat. No wonder that often two people with the same body weight look quite different in terms of appearance. This is related to the ratio of muscle mass to fat. Of course, the BMI indicator does not take into account these differences.

Contrary to appearances, regular sports people who are well-built are often classified as overweight or even obese. According to the BMI index, they are at risk of diabetes and heart disease, which is obviously inconsistent with reality, because it is thanks to the large muscle mass and active lifestyle that it is possible to avoid unwanted illnesses. Another factor affecting the mass of our body is the degree of mineralization and bone density.

The correct body weight will be completely different for people with a small and thick-walled structure. In addition, the BMI index does not take into account the fact that bone density decreases with age, and older people often suffer from osteoporosis, which underestimates their body mass.

Important! With age, the mass of muscles and bones decreases most often, and the amount of fat increases. The BMI index does not take into account the changes that occur in the aging process of the organism, therefore the BMI results in the elderly are often incorrectly interpreted.

The BMI index is calculated only taking into account certain standards adopted for a given population. There is no universal indicator for ideal body weight, because it depends on race, sex, age, and sometimes also performed profession – a different standard will have bodybuilders, and another light athletes.

BMI calculators are for adults only, ie from the age of 18. In children, centile grids are used, Which help to assess the proper physical development of the youngest children. Although the BMI index is calculated in children and adults in a similar way, the criteria used for the analysis of the results for children and adolescents are different than those in adults. This is related to two factors:

  • the amount of fat varies between boys and girls,
  • the amount of fat varies with age.

The BMI value above 30 is an alarm signal that should make us contact a doctor. Diagnosis of diseases such as heart diseases, diabetes ,  intestinal cancer and atherosclerosis at an early stage, allows to speed up the treatment process and effectively fight diseases.
