Types of pillows – what to choose for yourself?

When you make a bed, you will sleep like that – says the famous proverb. Your healthy and strong sleep depends on many factors. One of the most important is a well-prepared bed. Today we will discuss about types of pillows and what to choose for yourself. Usually, you try to choose a mattress and quilt for yourself, but how is it with a pillow? Do you know that its size, height, and filling is of great importance?

Incorrect pillows affect

Incorrect pillow selection negatively affects the neck position during sleep. If you do not want to wake up in the morning with pain in the neck and head, be sure to read the different types of pillows. There are pillows with natural and synthetic filling on the market. Their shape, size, height and hardness significantly affect the comfort experienced during rest. In addition, you must answer the question, do you usually sleep on the stomach, on the side or on the back? The cushion can not be too high or too low. You will ensure a healthy sleep and painless awakening, if the cervical section, resting on the pillow, will not be too elevated, bent backwards or sideways. The neck should form a straight line with the rest of the spine.

If you sleep on the stomach most often, we recommend the pillow very flat and soft. When you still feel your neck tension, try to put your head on the mattress itself. At this position, the cushion is sometimes unnecessary. For people falling asleep on the side, the most comfortable will be high and hard pillows. Ideally, if the space between the ear and the shoulder is filled. Moderately hard and medium high will serve those who like to sleep on their backs. It is important that the cushion does not push the head forward too much. When choosing a pillow, take into account the softness of the mattress and how the body collapses in it. If you really “fall down”, then you need a slightly lower cushion.

Type, shape and size

Traditional (classic) pillows have a rectangular or square shape and are most often filled with shredded material, which allows them to be bent and freely formed. In addition to the sizes 40 × 40 cm, 60 × 70 cm and 70 × 80 cm are also available on the market. The wider your shoulders, the higher the cushion should be. However, these large cushions are not a good support for the spine, because we usually put on the shoulders. Often we need precise support, so choose a profiled cushion (ergonomic, anatomic, orthopedic), which brings relief in many ailments (including snoring, headaches, neck pain, back pain).

Filling the pillow

The disadvantage of natural cushion pads is that they are expensive, while the advantage is the excellent drainage of excess moisture and breathability. Most often you meet down or feather filling, the latter being a mix of down and feathers, so it is heavier and inferior in quality. The silk and linen stock does not attract dust and provides chill on hot summer nights. In turn, the woolen or millet load warms in winter and also does not attract dust. Fill in spelled or buckwheat adapts to the shape of the head, works just like a profiled cushion. Thanks to it, you’ll get rid of your headache or joint muscles. For allergy sufferers, bamboo or green tea stacks will be suitable – they are bactericidal, relaxing and allow the skin to breathe.

Filling pillows

The synthetic filling is cheap, safe for allergy sufferers and dries quickly. At the same time, however, a small cost equals lower quality and poor air permeability (filling from analine or granules). If you want to sleep on a high quality bed, invest in filling with: 
– fiber – very goodventilation , elasticity, flexibility and adjustment to the shape of the head; 
– foam – excellent breathability, adjustment to body temperature and its shape; 
– latex – poor breathing properties, but good flexibility.

Covering the pillow

As with the batch, there are different types of pillow cases that you can put on a pillow. Synthetic coatings are the cheapest, easy to wash and dry quickly, but it is a material with bad breathing properties. Cotton cushions are goodventilation , but they are destroyed after a few washes. A good option is to buy a covering that combines a synthetic with cotton or made of microfibers, making it more durable and airy at the same time. For allergy sufferers and people who need a cool feeling while sleeping, a linen cover will be the best. The highest quality are silk and wool coverings, the first ones cool in summer and the second ones heat in the winter.  

How often do you replace your cushions with new ones?

Some have not changed their pillows for over 10 years, but this is not something to be ashamed of. As long as the pillow comforts you while you sleep and you do not wake up with pain, it is safe to use. However, this does not absolve you from the obligation to wash it. The cushion should be washed regularly, 2-3 times a year. The most harmful are house dust mites that settle in the bedding and cause allergies and, consequently, asthma.
